![]() ![]() Yes it was loud but not in a good way.Īdding a steep sloped high pass filter that cuts frequencies that are only sapping power (below the speaker/cab lower 3db point that are neither audible nor useful). ![]() I swapped the speaker for a more sensitive one (db/W measured 1 metre from the cone) which also handled about double the power. I have done it on a better designed cab than that and it wasn't really a success. You can add more power and a better speaker and it will probably sound a bit louder but "boxy" as hell. The cabinet design is often a limiting factor, commercial builders usually build down to a price not up to a spec. Wall flexing which produces all sorts of unwanted nodes and cancellations. Power compression where the voice coil heats up and turns the increased power into heat. The cure for his is larger diameter ports to slow the air speed down but then they need to be longer to maintain the correct tuning frequency. Port chuffing in ported cabs where the air reaches a critical velocity (approaching the speed of sound) and starts to make a chuffing noise. All sorts of things come into play, including :. ![]() I forget the figures, but if you are interested do a bit of reading over on talkbass but don't go posting unless you want to get shot down big style.īass amps/speakers are quite different to those for guitar, you cannot just up the power and expect it to be louder with the same sound. You will probably get more volume out by adding a similar design of extension speaker cab as long as the amp can stand driving a lower impedance. I think the speaker should be able to handle the power as it's a replacement for the original one and is higher rated. DrNomis wrote:Just wondering if it's possible to mod these amps (my TKO 80 that is) so that they put out more power?, maybe upgrade the power transistors and possibly the power transformer, would be cool to mod it to put out something like 100 to 150 watts. ![]()
